Tube Socks

As soon as I cast off MissA’s socks, I cast on for MissB. She’s still at that stage in which she’ll put on her socks any which way, so I thought I’d give tube socks a go.

Grey for Mr. Grey

Fantastic job seeing that I had two left feet! No one wrote in why!

Sock the first was done to pattern and fit me perfectly, so I added an extra lace chart repeat to sock the second and finished knitting it and that one fit Ben. A pair of mismatched socks is always a photo shoot (though some may be rather hush hush). I’ve since frogged the toe from sock the first and made it to match the other.

1. Not on raveley yet: ;)
2. Pattern Source: Folk Socks by Nancy Bush
3. Yarn: Lorna’s Laces, 2 skeins in Pewter
4. Needle Size: US 0 (2mm)
5. Gauge: good question, will check when done NAK
6. Pattern Changes: No picot on hem (requested by recipient), Eye of Partridge heel, extra lace pattern repeat to give more length, used ssk at beginning of round on second toe to mirror first.
7. Yarn Review: Had a little tiny ball left from each foot as usual (even though the yarn shop insists I should get 3 socks from 2 skeins)
8. Did it fit: Yes, with the extra repeat. It fit my foot perfectly without it.
9. How many times did I frog: Just the toe once.
A. Usability analysis: Will be fabulous
B. Final Thoughts: I almost want to make a pair for me! So many other patterns to try first!

I’ve got another 2-3 inches to go before I reach the proper length for my Schottische Kilt Hose. I just ripped out the heel and reseated the needles.. Now I can’t find my working needle!

No-Bake Cookies
Better news, though: the children love No-Bake cookies!
(adapted from Betty Crocker Cookie Book)

1 cup (6 oz) chips: semisweet chocolate or peanut butter chips
1/4 cup liquid sweet: light or dark corn syrup, or maple syrup, or honey
1/4 cup peanut butter
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp Vanilla
2 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup nuts (they call for peanuts, we used pecans)

In a saucepan, heat all ingredients -except oats and nuts- until smooth, stirring to keep from burning. Remove from heat, add oats and nuts, and stir until well coated. Place onto wax paper (on a cookie sheet or in a container) by rounded spoonfuls. Refrigerate until cooled (if you can resist- this lets the moist ingredients soak into the oats), and enjoy!

Dear Sue,

I’ve been working hard away at knitting up these socks for you. I’ve been watching oh so closely as the colors pool and swirl and do odd things. I remembered that you wanted them shorter, but hadn’t read ahead in the instructions before beginning them. There’s calf-shaping for the original 8.5 inch legs and you only wanted 6 inches. Well, I had to finish the shaping to get to the right stitch count for the heel/foot area.

I know your like a fashionable Diva. I don’t want these socks to be a total and utter disappointment to you. If you don’t like them now, tell me.
(and I’ll keep them ;) )

Isn’t that swirl cool? (my toes look funny because they’re curled on the edge of the coffee table)

And, check out the children:

This is TJ’s version of botany class. He keeps an eye on the garden and brings in good eats. Here, he’s slicing up one of our bell peppers to share with the girls and me.

Saturday Morning Cartoons?

Not around here!

AJ and I were making blueberry muffins!

I’m a little behind on updates.. On Friday, Ben made me move my stash from the chest in the family room back into the butler table in the living room. I think I’m a little more organized in this anyway (the rest of the stash is in the chest of drawers by the couch in the family room). After getting everything into the living room, I started sorting and when he came in he caught me starting a new project! Don’t worry, I frogged 2 older projects to work on this.. Then yesterday, I frogged it and started a new baby sweater.

I finally finished those Nancy Bush Folk Socks for TJ! I decided to do 2 different heels to try them, mainly because I probably wont want to do these again since you have to cut the yarn and graft the heels before finishing the feet. These are her variations on the common heel. The squared one is the Common Heel, the rounded one is the Shaped Common Heel. I do like the look of the shaped one, but with having to graft it before I go on, I doubt I’ll make it again. If I were paying more attention, I could have lined up the stripe pattern to match the leg, but I simply got the yarn to about the same place on each ball to continue the foot.
20060901tjheels20060901tjsocks This ups me to 2.5 for SoS! I also started the cuffs (1 down, 1 just started) for Sue’s tabi socks. They’ve got a swirl going on, I hope the second will match!
I think I’ll bury those Jays I was working on because they’re just killing my sock groove. I did place them out of sight again because they’re just not working. Perhaps they’ll be a good candidate for Froggy Days..

Summer of Socks #3

For my BushMaster Study: I had been reading through Folks Socks previously and put it down unfinished. Friday, I came across the book again and flipped through the patterns and found that it contains the perfect pattern for my BushMastery to begin, a child’s size variation of the basic sock pattern!

2006.07.31 aj socks1That’s Gatorade all over her face..

The pattern calls for 15st/2in but I came up with 8st/in with this needle size. I was planning on making the socks for TJ, but with the smaller gauge they were a touch too tight; I finished the length to fit AJ. She put the first on as soon as I was done sewing in ends and told me she had one foot in a sock and one foot out. When I finished the second sock, she simply sweetly said, “Thank you,” as she put it on.
I’ve seen on other sites that many knitters list the FO info, so:

2006.07.31 AJ socks2

Pattern: Folk Socks book, ‘A Classic Sock Pattern’ (p. 59) as written with Round Heel shaping and Wedge Toe (yarn drawn through at end).
Needles: size 1, Gauge: 8st/in
Yarn: LB Magic Stripes #201 (almost out now! Don’t think I can get another whole pair!)

I’m thinking the gathered toe won’t work as well for our feet. It stretches fine, but I like the fit of grafted toes a bit better.

Summer of Socks

I joined this knit-along because I’m working on socks mainly. They’re near-instant gratification in knitting. I have learned thus far that I must knit both socks at once or SSS (Second Sock Syndrome) hits me before I finish #1.

Summer of Socks

I’ve also decided that this will help me begin a (mini?) Nancy Bush Master’s Study as begun by Purly Whites, and miniturized by Nona. I haven’t decided quite how indepth mine will be, but I am working on a list of patterns to use - some from other sources as well, for I am a new knitter and gleaming from any of greater knowledge will improve mine own.

I must hit the hay. I moved my blog entries from my 360 account over here tonight and hadn’t planned on this entry quite yet.
